Surprise, Surprise ...Intermat Releases 2007 D1 Wrestling Recruiting Class Rankings

College wrestling has closed the books on another competitive NCAA Division 1 recruiting season.  In a sign that New York State continues to look stronger in the eyes of D1 wrestling recruiters, the 2007 class boasts Corey Jantzen from Shoreham Wading River (one of the top recruits in the country at any weight) and Michael Chaires from CBA.

Plus, two former New York State wrestlers (Gregor Gillespie and Joshua Glenn) pitched in by  nailing down a pair of National Championships.  Eight other former NYS wrestlers became NCAA D1 All-Americans.  Not too shabby considering the lack of exposure the New York kids get due to the state's fossilized single entry state championship format.

We've laid out the 2007 and 2006 recruiting class rankings in a side-by-side format for people that like to compare these kinds of things.  In addition, we've included the team scores from the 2007 NCAA D1 Wrestling Championships and made some comparisons of our own.

An analysis of the top ten reveals four surprises. They are two no-shows from the 2006 recruiting class (Virginia Tech & Kent State) who claimed the #4 and #10 spots.  And two 2006 top ten teams, #4 Boise State and #7 Arizona State, both of which have dropped out of the top 30 for 2007.

2006 Best Bang for the Buck: Iowa State - Northwestern - Hofstra

2006 Worst Bang for the Buck: Lehigh - Boise State - Arizona State

The full impact of the NCAA's Academic Performance Rate (APR) and its long-term effects on the recruiting process for wrestling as well as other NCAA sports isn't known right now.  But the fallout from its implementation became a reality with this year's Academic Progress Report. With the threat of losing scholarship money and even expulsion from the NCAA for poor graduation rates, make no mistake, the Academic Performance Rate "will" effect the recruiting process.
